Vrelo is a cave on a Matka Lake near Skopje, Macedonia. This cave is a system of two caves one above and one under water. The current depth of the cave is 212 meters and it’s the deepest cave in the Balkans and the second in Europe, but the exploring expeditions has not reached the end yet. In 2007 the cave was only 100m reached and it was ranked 77th in the worlds deepest caves, but with the new explorations in 2010 divers has got to 212m but still not reached the end of cave Vrelo. This year expedition was leaded by two world known divers Luigi Kasati from Italy and Mark Vandermeulen from Belgium. They found two new underwater galleries, one on 165meters depth, and a direct way to the first underwater gallery which will cut down the way for the upcoming research. The cave is full of stalactites and there are really amazing crystal posts all over the cave. The “twins posts” which are 6meters high and with a beautiful white crystal color are really impressing. The cave has been nominated for a Seven World Wonders competition and has made it to the semi-finals. See here.
